At Thirteen

At thirteen we were like hatchlings
our teacher was our mother hen
who fussed over us and taught us how to be darlings
who wore uniforms, conformed and then...
We emerged at different paces acquiring our individuality
As we advanced through our teenage years
only the uniform gave us our collective identity
but clothed beneath were our goals, our tears and our fears
At thirteen we were so full of innocence
all uniforms and obedience
Now as I see this picture before me
I wonder about each of us, are we finally free?
